Good morning, friend. I want to talk to you about hinges today.
Think about the biggest, heaviest door you've ever walked through — a church door, a barn door, one of those great big oak doors on an old estate. It takes real weight to move it. But what's actually holding that whole door up, letting it swing open and closed a thousand times over? A couple of small metal hinges, tucked off to the side, easy to miss if you're not looking for them.
Nobody stands in awe of the hinge. Everybody notices the door. But take the hinge away, and the door isn't a door anymore — it's just a heavy slab of wood going nowhere.
I think that's exactly how God tends to work in our lives. We're praying for the big door — the new job, the healed relationship, the breakthrough we can see coming from a mile away. And meanwhile, God is quietly working on the hinge: the small nudge to make one phone call, the little bit of patience He's growing in you, the tiny act of obedience nobody else will ever know about. It doesn't look like much. It doesn't feel like much. But it's the very thing the big door is going to swing on.
Scripture tells us not to despise small beginnings. Zechariah says it plainly, and I think we skip right past it because small doesn't feel spiritual. But a mustard seed is small. Five loaves and two fish are small. A cup of cold water given in His name is small. God has never once been embarrassed to work through small things — He seems to prefer it, honestly, because it leaves no room for us to take the credit.
So today, don't overlook the small thing in front of you. The quiet obedience. The little provision that showed up right when you needed it and you almost didn't notice. The small kindness, the small "yes," the small step of faith that feels too tiny to matter. That's not God being stingy with you. That's the hinge. That's what the big door is going to swing on.
Honor the small things today. They're doing more work than you think.
