When You Feel Like You're Behind

Can I be honest with you for a second? Some mornings I sit down with my coffee, look at my to-do list, my Bible still closed on the nightstand, and I feel it — that little whisper that says you're behind. Behind on the reading plan. Behind on the goals. Behind on becoming who you thought you'd be by now.

If that's you today, friend, come sit with me a minute.

Here's what I've had to learn the hard way, more than once: God isn't grading you on a curve against anyone else's timeline — not your sister's, not the woman on Instagram with the color-coded journal, not even the version of you from five years ago who swore she'd have it all together by now. He's not up there tapping His foot.

"He has made everything beautiful in its time." — Ecclesiastes 3:11

In its time. Not your time. Not Instagram's time. His.

I think a lot of us confuse being behind with being in a season. A season of waiting isn't wasted time — it's often the exact place where God is doing the quiet work nobody claps for. The roots grow underground before anything shows up above the soil. You don't see it happening, but it's happening.

So today, instead of measuring yourself against a calendar or a checklist, try this instead:

  • Open the Word for five minutes, not fifty. Five is not nothing.
  • Say thank you before you say sorry. Gratitude first, guilt second — or not at all.
  • Let today be enough. Not perfect. Enough.

This is actually a huge part of why I built Grace Unfolding the way I did — no shame spirals if you miss a day, no page you "failed." Just a gentle, hyperlinked path back in, wherever you left off, whenever you're ready. And if what you're really needing right now isn't more reading but more listening — learning to actually recognize His voice in the noise — Still, Small Voice was written for exactly that ache.

You are not behind, sweet friend. You are exactly where grace found you today. And that's enough to start from.

Come say hi over on Instagram @mommajscozycottage — I'd love to hear which season you're in right now.

With so much love,
Momma J 🤍
